The safety of children and vulnerable adults is paramount and all, without exception, have the right to protection from abuse.  All suspicions and allegations of abuse will be taken seriously and responded to swiftly and appropriately, and management, staff and volunteers have a responsibility to report concerns.

WHAT IS THE PURPOSE AND FUNCTION OF THE ORGANISATION?

Stage by Stage is a theatre arts school, constituted to promote the many forms of performing arts by offering a platform for amateur performance by young people.  It is operated by qualified staff and volunteers who share the aim of creating a friendly learning environment which is open to young people of all backgrounds, abilities and experience.

WHAT IS THE SCHOOL ENVIRONMENT?

Stage by Stage owns Stage Studios.  It is important for all parents, guardians or carers to be aware that this inner city venue is open to the general public throughout the day.  Whilst our staff conduct classes, we remind all parents, guardians or carers that they should ensure adequate supervision for their children at all times whilst in the venue.  As indicated in our code of conduct, children should not be left unattended outside the building, waiting for collection.

TO WHOM DOES THIS POLICY APPLY?

This policy relates to children under the age of 18 years and those vulnerable adults of any age who are identified to the organisers prior to their arrival at the Studios.  This should be done by contacting the address or telephone number of our Office Manager.  In recognizing the needs of children from all ethnic groups and children who are disabled, Stage by Stage actively seeks to meet needs notified to the school by parents, guardians or carers and/ or teachers.

WHO ARE THE STAFF?

All members of the staff have been voluntarily checked through the Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) and during the running of activities, duty rotas designate only those volunteers with CRB disclosure certificates will be working where there is a likelihood of coming into contact with participants.  All other volunteers are required to provide two referees in writing, along with contact details, which are held by the Stage by Stage office.  Show chaperones all have CRB clearance.  All staff wear clearly identifiable uniforms whilst on duty and anyone wearing a uniform may be approached in case of a problem.  A qualified first-aider is always on duty.  At other venues where performances take place, the theatre’s own staff members wear badges identifying their role; these staff members are also made aware of the presence and whereabouts of Stage by Stage staff throughout the period of the production.

HOW DO PARTICIPANTS PREPARE FOR ATTENDANCE AT STAGE STUDIOS?

The full code of conduct is issued upon joining Stage by Stage.  We ask all parents, guardians and carers to ensure that they follow these procedures and support the school by planning their attendance well in advance.  Contact numbers are available through our publications and the website for anyone who wishes to ask any questions prior to our events.  We ask all parents, guardians and carers to explain their arrangements to participants before they arrive at the Studios.

WHAT POLICIES COVER THE PERFORMANCE AND CHANGING AREAS?

Male and female changing areas are allocated, with signs on all dressing room doors.  Whilst staff regularly move around the building, toilet facilities and changing rooms are not supervised by staff.  Parents, guardians or carers are asked to bear in mind when arranging supervision of children the fact that the venue is a public building.

WHAT IS OUR POLICY ON PHOTOGRAPHY AND VIDEO RECORDING?

No photographic or recording equipment is permitted within the Studios without prior parental consent.  Any press photography will take place by appointment only, with the express permission of the parents, guardians or carers of children involved.

WHAT LEGISLATION AND GUIDANCE SUPPORTS THIS POLICY?

The Children Act 1989; The Police Act 1997; The Data Protection Act 1998; The Human Rights Act 1998; The Protection of Children Act 1999; The Criminal Justice and Court Services Act 2000; The Children Act 2004.

WHEN IS THIS POLICY REVIEWED?

The school will constantly review this policy document, improving and enhancing it as necessary.  In doing this, we will look to the Devon County Council, the National Association of Youth Theatre and the British & International Federation of Festivals for support, and that body, in turn, will look to other agencies for good practice, most notably the NSPCC and Arts Council of England policy guidelines.
